Seriously?!

OK so I work at the hospital in what they call Central Staffing. This means that I am trained to work on any of the floors at the hospital including Medical, Surgical, Cardiac, Emergency Room, Intensive Care, Orthopedic, Cancer, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Newborn Intensive Care, and Mom and Baby/Postpartum. Sounds really great to be able to be so diverse in training as a registered nurse. It was until recently. I work 3 12 hour shifts each week to be called full time. In Central Staffing, we are scheduled for those three shifts but then we have to call in each night before we work to find out where we will be working. They will either tell us a floor or tell us we are on call for the night. Usually I love it when I hear on call because then you get paid MORE when they do call you in. Plus you get paid a partial rate just to sit at home, run errands, etc. However during the past three weeks (9 shifts) I have only worked TWO. All the others I was on call but NEVER called in. Its getting really frustrating because I have now depleted all my PTO (paid time off) that I have saved up for rainy days. I had to use PTO or not have enough in my pay check to pay all of my bills. Grrrr! So here I am venting. I REALLY REALLY hope I actually work somewhere tonight. I am getting sick of being on call. I actually applied to a couple of the floors - cardiac and orthopedic in hopes that I could find myself a more permanent home. Plus the people working on specific floors work before Central Staffing works. If their floor is over staffed, one of their nurses will work on a different floor BEFORE we work. So I am hoping to get hired to a more permanent home. I already found out that I did not get the cardiac job but I am still crossing my fingers for the orthopedic floor. Wish me luck!! Thats all for now. :)
